Basalt Fiber vs Fiberglass: Which Should You Choose for Reinforcement?

Raw Material and Production

Fiberglass is produced from a blend of raw materials — silica sand, soda ash and limestone — melted and drawn into fibers. Basalt fiber is produced from a single natural volcanic rock, melted at around 1400°C and drawn into filaments without any additives. This single-source process is part of why basalt fiber is often marketed as the more environmentally sustainable option.

Performance Comparison

Basalt fiber generally offers higher temperature resistance, better chemical and alkali resistance, and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than standard fiberglass. Both are corrosion-resistant and perform far better than steel rebar in corrosive environments. E-Glass fiberglass, however, offers a stronger cost-to-performance ratio for most standard construction and composite applications, and is available in a far broader range of product forms.

Which One for Which Project?

For standard plaster mesh, marble/mosaic reinforcement, general facade insulation and most composite parts, E-Glass fiberglass is the more economical and perfectly adequate choice. For environments with high corrosion exposure (marine structures, chemical plants), applications demanding extreme temperature resistance, or projects prioritizing sustainability, basalt fiber reinforcement — woven fabric, geogrid, or FRP rebar — can be the stronger choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is basalt fiber always better than fiberglass?+

No — it's different, not strictly better. For most standard applications, fiberglass is both adequate and more cost-effective. Basalt fiber earns its premium in specific high-performance or high-corrosion scenarios.

Can basalt FRP rebar fully replace steel rebar?+

In projects with high corrosion risk or where electrical non-conductivity or lighter weight matters, yes it can be considered — but the decision should follow structural calculations and local building code requirements for the specific project.
